The 25th Space Range Squadron has a proud legacy that traces its origin to the very beginning of aerial warfare. It was originally organized as the 20th Aero Squadron on June 13, 1917 and formally designated the 25th Aero Squadron June 22, 1917. Perhaps several "Jennys" or bi-planes were utilized at that time. Germany's "Red Baron" flew a bright red Fokker with three wings and fired two of his machine guns right through the engines propeller! Perhaps his side arm was a blazing Thompson .45 for side-aeroplane combat. Early airplanes' pilots resorted to pistols, rifles and grenades. But as pioneers of military aviation, the 25th was trained to fly British-made SE-5 aircraft (that probably did not fire through the propeller) and were sent to France to participate in combat operations during the Meuse-Argonne Campaign. Following the war, the 25th Aero Squadron was stationed at Mitchell Field, New York until demobilized on June 17, 1919.

Fast-forward to July 1, 2004, Air Force Space Command - again activated (after several other changes along the years) the 25th, this time as the 25th Space Control Tactics Squadron with a mission to develop and document space tactics, operate the Space Range and propagate approved tactics and space control employment concepts to warfighters.

However, Nov. 11, 2007, the squadron was redesignated to be the 25th Space Range Squadron acknowledging the growing importance of its mission; operating the nation's only Space Test and Training Range in direct support of the DoD.

Rest assured, NOBODY is taking a bi-plane to 70,000 feet and above! Today's aircraft would be completely alien to Baron Von Rickenhoff. BTW, the "Red (non-communist) Baron" [nothing to do with the pizza brand] "badness" was "miniaturized" for a Mickey Rooney/Toby "Spiderman" movie. It was "not bad" although one had to leave one's "no way Jose" rationale - in the foyer of the movie place. The movie was NOT a "chick flick" or an "adventurous action thriller-loving-bloody-vicious" kind of movie, but was OK for family viewing, especially the "kids". "Spy Kids" was another good clean fun movie that was not so violent. Maybe BOTH will have sequels? But "Toby" is far too expensive by now. Also that "Transformer Kid" with the unusual name.
